surtout la suprême expression de l'œuvre de l'homme en harmonie avec
l'environnement; c'est une citadelle située au sommet d'un crête étroite
au-dessus de la rivière turbulente, battue par le vent intense des
montagnes escarpées du contrefort amazonien.
Machu
Picchu demeura cachée pendant des siècles jusqu'en 1911, date à
laquelle le professeur Hiram Bingham la fît connaître au monde entier
L'ensemble archéologique est divisé en deux secteurs appelés Agricole
(" andenes " - gradins) et Urbain où se trouvent des places,
des temples, des palais, des entrepôts, des ateliers, des escaliers et
des fontaines qui sont agencés sur les deux secteurs sur quelques 10 à
20 ha. chacun.
Il est évident que Cusco, la capitale de l'État Inca, a été prise pour
modèle dans la distribution architectonique du site car Machupicchu possède
tous les éléments urbains adaptés à la sinuosité du terrain et aux
différentes dénivellations.
Les fouilles archéologiques réalisées après la visite de Bingham ont
permis de conclure que le terrain a été remblayé au préalable avec un
matériau qui n'appartient pas au site, étant donné que le sol de ce
dernier, formé par un socle de granit, est très pauvre en terre fertile.
