Day 1
Transfer to Wasai Puerto Maldonado Hotel | Cachuela Center
Reception at the airport and transfer to WASAI Maldonado Hotel at the banks of the Madre de Dios River. Welcome drink and lodging in comfortable rooms with a nice view of the river. Small walk to know the surroundings until lunch. Brief rest. After lunch we will go by car to Cachuela Center 30 minutes away from Puerto Maldonado. There we will start with a brief Etnobothanical walk through the jungle until we get to the Canopy Walkway. These bridges hang at 15 meters above the ground, allowing a great view of the jungle biodiversity. You will walk among huge trees and medicinal plants typical of the Peruvian rainforest. Guides will give an explanation of the tropical ecology and will answer any question. The bridges end in the observation tower which goes up to 40m above the ground offering an amazing view of the rainforest. Then when the sun is setting we will take some cacao beans from our local plantation and prepare some natural chocolate to eat right on the spot with the views of the Madre de Dios River at sunset. Free until dinner. Night at WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge. (L, D)
Day 2
Parrot’s Clay Lick | Sandoval Lake
Early in the morning visit the Parrots clay lick located at 30 minutes from Puerto Maldonado in Madre de Dios River, then back to the hotel in Puerto Maldonado. After lunch we will leave and travel for thirty minutes on the Madre de Dios River, to the access trail to Lake Sandoval, a beautiful oxbow lake inside Tambopata National Reserve. 3 km hike to the banks of the lake. There we will board a canoe to paddle around the lake enjoying the beauty of the landscape and observing the wildlife, such as kingfishers, herons, hoatzins (unique pre historic looking birds) , monkeys, etc. If we are lucky we could see the family of giant river otters which live at the lake.
The sunset in the lake is amazing and as night falls the rainforest awakens with the sounds of nature. This marks the time to begin our return walk to the Madre de Dios River and head back to our comfortable rooms in Puerto Maldonado. During the night, while cruising back to the hotel we will search for caymans in the Madre de Dios River. The lack of light gives us a good chance to have a stunning view of the southern constellations and the milky way.
After dinner you have free time to visit the city or rest. We can enjoy the pool and its cascade surrounded by the verdant vegetation of the Peruvian Rainforest. Rest of the night free to enjoy the night life of this welcoming city. Night at WASAI Maldonado Hotel. (B, L, D)
