Amazon Expedition to the Upper Tambopata River Sandoval Lake 4/3

This trip is full of adventure, with great possibilities to observe local wildlife and the most attractive landscapes: The amazing Chuncho Macaw Claylick in Tambopata National Reserve and the breathtaking Sandoval Lake. This complete program allows the traveler to experience the Tambopata rainforest at its most pristine state.

Day 1 Transfer to Wasai Tambopata Lodge | Night Walk

Reception at the airport and transfer to Wasai Puerto Maldonado Ecolodge, where you will be welcomed with a delicious tropical juice. After a brief explanation of the tour and accommodating the luggage, we will start a trip of approximately two hours to Wasai Tambopata lodge. The trip is initially carried out by land vehicle for 47km of paved road followed by 17 km of an off-road route that passes through settler’s farms and primary forests. This road ends in a small port in the Tambopata river where our motorboat will be waiting for us to cruise the Tambopata River downstream for approximately 20 minutes, headed towards WASAI Tambopata Lodge (Box lunch on the route). During the journey we will have the opportunity to observe various bird species, hopefully families of capybaras, the world largest rodents, alligators and other wildlife.

Reception and accommodation at the Lodge. Introductory nocturnal walk to understand rainforest ecosystems and see and hear some of the amazing insects, bats, frogs, and perhaps some occasional encounter with other nocturnal mammals. Return to the lodge for dinner. We will enjoy diverse sounds of the jungle which will accompany our first night in the Amazon. Night at WASAI Tambopata Lodge.

Day 2 Chuncho Macaw Claylick | Etnobotanical Walk | Cayman Search

Early wake up at dawn to take a light breakfast (coffee or infusion), to begin with our 40-minute journey upstream to the Macaw Clay Lick “El Chuncho” in the limit of Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and Tambopata National Reserve. We will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural sceneries and wildlife of the riverbanks. At our arrival, if weather permits, we will observe one of the greatest wildlife spectacles where hundreds of parrots and different species of macaws gather to eat clay, an unforgettable experience. We will have breakfast while we wait for the macaws to arrive.

In the middle morning we return to the lodge, this route through the Tambopata river offers high chances to spot jaguars in the river banks, the best in Tambopata. When we arrive to the lodge there you take a rest, do the adventure activities or enjoy the facilities and the surroundings of Wasai. Also, you will have the chance of swimming in the Tambopata River. Those who wish can do kayaking on the river or you can go fishing in the Tambopata river, inhabited by more than 250 species of fish.

After lunch, we will have an ethno botanical walk through the jungle to learn about plants and medicinal trees of the Tambopata rainforest; and to observe the complex jungle ecosystem where we will find walking palm trees, giant and sacred lupuna trees, natural dyes and so on. At nightfall, we embark the boat again and slowly cruise the river in darkness in search for cayman.

WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge

Day 3 Puerto Maldonado Hotel | Sandoval Lake

After breakfast we will make a trip in boat to the WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge, in Puerto Maldonado where we will relax in our bungalows and enjoy a tasty lunch. After lunch we will leave and travel for thirty minutes on the Madre de Dios River, to the access trail to Sandoval Lake, a beautiful rainforest oxbow lake. 3 km hike to the banks of the lake. There we will board a canoe to paddle around the lake enjoying the beauty of the landscape and observing the wildlife, such as kingfishers, herons, hoatzins (unique pre historic looking birds), monkeys, caymans, etc. If we are lucky we could see the family of giant river otters which live at the lake.

Then we will head back to the boat and cruise back to the hotel with the sunset.There you will enjoy the comforts of the modern rooms in WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge. After dinner you can rest or go around the city to get a feel of the town. You can enjoy the swimming pool and its cascade surrounded by tropical vegetation. Day 4 Cacao Experience | Transfer out

After breakfast we will go to Cacao Center which is located across the street from the Hotel. Here there will be a workshop where you will be shown the different types of cacao beans produced in Tambopata and other Peruvian regions and the different ways it is processed. You will get the chance to taste different products made from cacao. You will also learn how to elaborate chocolate and every participant will get a craft made chocolate bar as a gift. Note: The workshop usually takes around 2 hours, but depending on your flight schedule it might be shortened. Transfer to the airport. (B)
